What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical term that means enlargement of the male breast. It can affect one breast or both and is relatively common in adolescent boys and older males alike. A reported 35 to 40% of males are affected by gynecomastia. The emotional and social effects of this condition can be very distressing. Many patients say they suffer from poor body image, expressing feelings of shame, embarrassment, and humiliation. They are often reluctant to remove their shirts in public and shy away from social interactions and activities like swimming, playing on sports teams, and participating in gym class.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

There is no known measurable cause of gynecomastia in the vast majority of patients. In a small percentage of patients, gynecomastia may be caused by certain drugs or medical conditions involving the thyroid gland, kidneys, liver, or testes. If deemed appropriate, a patient may be evaluated by an endocrinologist or internist to rule out a known cause. When gynecomastia persists beyond 12 months, it rarely regresses.

How Do You Fix Gynecomastia?

Fortunately, in most cases, gynecomastia can be corrected surgically through a straightforward procedure at the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery. The procedure is usually accompanied by a quick, painless recovery. This results in a flatter, firmer chest with improved contour and no visible scarring. It also leads to a marked improvement in emotional outlook.

What Is Scarless Breast Reduction for Men?

In patients with gynecomastia, excess fat, glandular tissue, or a combination of both cause the breast to be enlarged. Unless you have severe gynecomastia with marked breast enlargement and excess skin, your gynecomastia can usually be treated using a minimally invasive liposuction technique, our scarless breast reduction. This technique eliminates the need for long, periareolar incisions still made by many surgeons that leave visible scarring around the areola.

Liposuction is effective for removing fatty excess from the breast. Dr. Parker typically uses SAFELipo® or VASER® ultrasonic lipo. He has found these techniques provide more efficient, less traumatic fat removal along with skin tightening and reduction. Through one tiny, well-concealed incision in the armpit area, Dr. Parker can remove the excess fat to achieve a flatter chest contour.

In patients with excess glandular tissue, Dr. Parker removes this tissue with a specialized cannula inserted through the same tiny incision in the armpit area used for liposuction. The incision is closed with a single dissolvable suture, leaving a hidden, imperceptible scar; in essence, it’s a minimally invasive “scarless” breast reduction.

The procedure takes about one hour to complete and is performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist in our on-site, fully accredited private surgical center.

Your Gynecomastia Consultation & Imaging Session

Consultations at the Parker Center are special. Dr. Parker will spend extra time with you, ensuring that he understands your goals and that you are fully educated about each potential solution. Additionally, our imaging expert will help you see the possibilities with digital photo imaging to show you what you will look like after surgery. Patients who are comparing providers often tell us our consults are the most thorough and informative they’ve ever experienced!

Your Pre-Op Gynecomastia Education Session

One to two weeks before your scheduled surgery, you will undergo a one-hour, in-office, face-to-face education session with one of Dr. Parker’s Nurse Educators. During this session, the nurse educator thoroughly reviews a detailed information packet to further educate you about your procedure. This includes a discussion of what to do to prepare for surgery, what occurs on the day of surgery, and what to expect after surgery during your recovery. It’s a detailed session that really educates our patients about the entire surgical process at the Parker Center. Patients tell us they love it because they feel so well-prepared for their surgery. Learn more about what to expect during your pre-op education session.

What Can I Expect After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Patients almost always recover quickly with our Rapid Recovery program, experiencing little pain (they often say they feel like they did too many push-ups), mild-to-moderate swelling, and minimal bruising from breast reduction for men. New Jersey patients notice an improvement in the appearance of their chest almost immediately. Their chests are firmer, flatter, and look normal, without any visible scarring.

Rapid Recovery Gynecomastia Surgery

The Parker Center’s Rapid Recovery techniques used during and after gynecomastia surgery help you heal more rapidly and comfortably than what you might experience at another practice. This means less time off from work and a sooner return to your normal activities.

Dr. Parker’s Rapid Recovery protocol includes:

  • Short-acting anesthetic agents and anti-emetic medications to hasten the recovery from anesthesia
  • A tailored regimen of medications given before, during, and after surgery to minimize postoperative pain, swelling, and bruising
  • Three postoperative medical manual lymphatic drainage massages to reduce swelling and bruising as well as accelerate healing
  • Topically applied state-of-the-art scar cream to help minimize the scars’ appearance.

The day after your surgery, you can shower and resume light activities. We encourage you to move around briefly starting the first day to boost circulation.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort, and the dissolvable sutures don’t need removal. If you have a desk job, plan to take several days off. You can usually start light exercise within 2 weeks and upper body exercises within 3 to 4 weeks. You should be back to unrestricted activity in 4 to 6 weeks.

We encourage you to move around briefly starting the first day to boost circulation.

Is Gynecomastia Surgery Worth It?

Having been bothered by their appearance, often for years, patients now feel better about what they see in the mirror. As Dr. Parker continues to see his patients for routine follow-up visits over the next several months, he observes their self-confidence rise. They are progressively more comfortable removing their shirts in public and engaging in social activities such as going to the beach. It is a very gratifying and uplifting surgery for our patients and staff alike.

How Do Men Get Rid of Inverted Nipples?

Up to 10% of men have inverted or retracted nipples. This condition may occur on its own or in conjunction with gynecomastia. During a simple, 20-minute, in-office procedure under local anesthesia, Dr. Parker releases the constricting bands with a tiny incision, allowing the inverted nipple to assume a normal position. The procedure can be done alone or at the time of gynecomastia correction with scarless breast reduction.

How Can I Tighten the Skin on My Chest?

For some men, a chest lift may be the best option. Male patients with severe gynecomastia have marked breast development, including excess skin and enlarged areolas. In these cases, Dr. Parker can perform male breast reduction to remove skin and re-contour the chest to achieve a masculine appearance. Men who have lost significant amounts of weight may also need help with excess chest skin.
