What to Expect from Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Many patients are interested in enhancing their curves with breast implants. But, those not familiar with breast augmentation may be unsure of what to expect. We often remind our breast augmentation patients here in New Jersey that the surgery follows 3 general steps: a consultation, the procedure, and recovery.

By knowing what to expect before your breast augmentation, you can feel more comfortable and confident about your decision. Here is an outline of what you will go through during your breast augmentation journey.

Your Consultation

The first step for any patient is a private consultation. During this time, you can have a 1-on-1 conversation with your surgeon to address your concerns and questions. This is the perfect time to discuss your surgery’s customizable details, such as breast implant types and incision locations. You can even feel real saline and silicone gel implants to get a better idea of your options.

Most consultations last for about 1 hour. At the end of your appointment, you will be given a specific estimate for the cost of your procedure.

Your Procedure

At our practice, your breast augmentation surgery will take place in our on-site surgery center. You will be asleep throughout the procedure, as anesthesia is provided for your comfort. During surgery, the doctor will create careful incisions either behind the breast tissue or pectoral muscle wall. After the implant is in the right location, the incisions will be sutured and then sealed with surgical tape.

The surgery takes from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your procedure. After relaxing in our recovery room after surgery, you will be allowed to head home.

Your Recovery

For your safety, have a loved one drive you home after surgery. You simply need to wear a comfortable sports bra during your recovery to give your new breasts the support they need. Take it easy the first week after surgery and avoid strenuous activities. Most patients can return to work after 1 week and expect a full recovery after 3 to 5 weeks. You will have 24/7 access to our nursing staff for any questions or concerns you have during your recovery.

If you’re interested in enhancing your curves with breast augmentation, be sure to find a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure. This is the best way to guarantee safe, satisfying results. To see examples from our own patients, browse our patients’ before-and-after photos.
