Patient of the Month for November 2011 – Eyelid Lift

Parker Center for Plastic Surgery

This month we are featuring a male patient who had lower eyelid surgery to improve his appearance.

It is said that “the eyes are the window to the soul”. This patient’s puffy lower eyelids caused him to look tired and less alert, even when he was well-rested. Aging eyelids can also make someone look older than their true age.

Youthful eyelids contain fat which doesn’t bulge. As we get older the fat that normally surrounds the eyeball bulges forward causing “fat bags” in the lower eyelids. Some patients have a family tendency toward this type of problem and this bulging fat can occur at a relatively young age, such as in this month’s patient.

Because our patient had no skin excess, the bulging fat was removed through an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scarring. As you read this patient’s story and blog, you’ll see that his surgical procedure was straight forward and his recovery, rapid. He is very typical of many of our patients, being very pleased with the natural, more youthful appearance of his eyes.

Blepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelidplasty or eyelid lift, is a commonly performed plastic surgery procedure. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 152,123 patients underwent blepharoplasty in 2010, 14 % of them men.
