Patient of the Month for May 2012 – Chin Augmentation

Parker Center for Plastic Surgery

This month we are featuring a patient who underwent chin augmentation and rhinoplasty to improve her profile. The procedures complimented each other, and the patient was ecstatic with her results, even though she originally sought out Dr. Parker only for a rhinoplasty. Her results illustrate how chin augmentation is an effective way to achieve a more balanced profile.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 11,171 chin augmentation procedures were performed in 2011—an impressive 9.9 percent rise from 2010. The procedure was popular with both men and women, as well as in all patients over the age of 20.

There’s been a lot of speculation as to the dramatic rise in chin implant procedures. According to Dr. Parker, “We noticed a growing interest in chin augmentation procedures as last year unfolded. Patients tell us that with today’s technology innovations such as Facebook, Skype, and their smart phones, they see more and more unflattering pictures of themselves with jawlines not as sharp as they want. This prompts them to investigate chin augmentation.”

Chin augmentation can make a dramatic difference to a person’s entire face. A stronger chin conveys the image of more authority, self confidence, and trustworthiness. It also provides better facial harmony with other facial features such as the nose, as seen with this month’s Featured Patient.

Chin augmentation is also popular because it is a brief surgical procedure, and recovery is relatively easy. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes to perform. It consists of inserting a shaped solid silicone implant through a small incision hidden under the chin and onto the jawbone (mandible) to build out a weak chin. It can be performed by itself or along with other facial procedures such as rhinoplastyliposuction of the neckface lift and neck lift.
