Wondering if there’s hope you can ever enjoy a complexion unmarred by acne scars? According to a report outlining a handful of recent advancements in scar care, all signs point to yes!

Here’s the scoop.

One clinical study published in Dermatology Surgery shows that participants gave a thumbs-up to two non-surgical methods for reducing scarring: microneedling and fractional laser resurfacing.

Patients were randomly chosen to receive either microneedling or fractional laser treatment for scars left from previous acne outbreaks. While the study was relatively small (42 participants), it’s worth noting that every single participant reported noticeable improvement in the appearance of scarring after a 3-treatment series, regardless of which treatment they received.

While those who underwent laser treatments experienced a greater incidence of temporary post-procedure redness and inflammation than the microneedling recipients, neither group reported their procedure as being significantly painful or causing interruption to their normal activities.

Additional reports share news of new topical treatments for active acne, which may help prevent acne scars from forming in the first place.

What should you take away from these studies?

Mainly, that there are a number of effective ways to address acne and reduce scarring. The best first step is to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or experienced aesthetic professional (working under physician supervision) who can evaluate your skin type and help you design a safe, effective treatment plan for your condition. Then, work closely with your skincare team, carefully following post-treatment instructions, to help ensure you get the results you want.

Reports of positive results from laser treatments and microneedling are no surprise to our Parker Center skincare professionals, who have helped successfully treat acne scars and other scarring for years using both methods, but it is certainly encouraging news for our patients!
