Northern New Jersey Plastic Surgery Patient: New Ears Go With Her New Life

Posted May 25, 2011 by Paul M. Parker, M.D., FACS

Melissa is a 30 year old professional who has lived with protruding ears all her life.  After finishing graduate school last spring, Melissa decided to give herself a present of otoplasty surgery.

Otoplasty, commonly known as “ear pinning, is the surgical correction of misshapen, protruding or prominent ears.  The problem develops from a failure of the ears to form a fold in the outer portion of the ear, known as the ‘anti helical fold” in utero. Surgery is performed to re create that fold and set the ears closer toward the scalp through an incision hidden behind the ear.  This surgery is frequently performed on children, often as young as 5 to 6, but can also be done in adults.

“In high school I was a cheerleader, and had to wear my hair up but I never felt as pretty as the other girls.  Now as an adult, I must wear my hair up for work and I’ve been told I look cute.  I don’t want to look cute like a seven year old, I want to look beautiful or sexy,” explained Melissa.

Growing up, Melissa’s family didn’t have money for the extras like plastic surgery.  She put herself through college and graduate school.  This surgery was her graduation gift to herself.

“I decided to look into having the surgery because I wanted to feel better about myself.  I wanted to feel confident about myself at work, especially since I have to wear my hair up all the time,” Melissa said.

Melissa was very methodical about her research into otoplasty and plastic surgeons in her area.  She selected six from her Internet research and made appointments for consultations with all of them.

“I wanted to make sure I found the right doctor.  I chose Dr. Parker for three specific reasons; he not only came across as the most technical but also as the most genuine and kind plastic surgeon I had met.  I knew that he was the surgeon for me,” Melissa said.

Melissa was very anxious and nervous about her surgery since she had never had general anesthesia before, but found Dr. Parker’s staff to be as kind and genuine as he is.  Melissa described Charlene, her nurse, as so comforting and really wonderful, making the entire experience great.

“I’m so thrilled with my ears now.  It was such a big issue for me and now I don’t ever have to think about it.  I can tell from the way my friends and fiancé looked at me after the surgery that it’s made a big difference in my appearance,” explained Melissa.

Melissa and her fiancé are getting married next fall and she is planning to wear her hair half up and half down with a cathedral veil, just as she’s always wanted.   Melissa’s confident now that she will look beautiful on her special day, and everyday following.
