Eyelid Rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)

Upper Eyelids
Your eyes probably receive more attention than any other feature of your face. This is for good reason; they are considered by many to be the window to the soul, and strong eye contact is crucial for communicating well in any setting.

When the upper eyelids begin to droop due to aging, many problems can arise. These problems can range from an aesthetically displeasing look to actual obstruction of vision. If droopy eyelids are making you look sad or tired all the time, or hindering your ability to see, it's time to consider eyelid rejuvenation.

  • Eyelid rejuvenation surgery, also called Blepharoplasty, is a procedure that is frequently done for both men and women.
  • It is usually done on patients over 35 years old and is often in conjunction with a brow lift or other facial surgeries performed at the Parker Center.
  • Although it will give your eyes the lift they need, this procedure won't remove crow's feet and other wrinkles around the eyelid.

The Procedure

  • Eyelid surgery can be performed using intravenous sedation, is relatively straightforward.
  • It usually takes about 45 minutes to complete.
  • A small incision is made in the crease of the eyelid and the extra fat cells are removed.
  • The sagging skin of your upper eyelid is also removed and the incision is carefully closed.
  • It leaves virtually no scarring.

Recovery

  • You'll be discharged within an hour or so of the procedure
  • There should be little postoperative pain
  • The eyes do not need to be bandaged
  • Sutures are removed within five to six days
  • Swelling and discoloration subsides within 10 to 14 days, with most patients returning to normal activities at that time

The result of the procedure is a dramatically fresh appearance to the eyes. Often, patients who have blepharoplasty are surprised by how many compliments they receive about their new looks. Since the surgery leaves virtually no scarring, friends and family will notice the dramatic change, but won't know why you look so vibrant.

Lower Eyelids

Our eyelids protect our eyes. The outside part of our eyelids is skin, and the inside layer has moist tissue called mucosa. Delicate muscles are attached to both lids and support comes from cartilage plates. The expressions in our eyes come not from the eyeballs themselves, which are blank, but from the movements and shape of the surrounding tissue.

As we age, the lower lids can become puffy and baggy. The skin stretches and starts to hang loosely, and muscles weaken. Fat accumulates. Our facial expressions change and may belie what we really feel. Eyelid surgery can correct these conditions, but it can't correct dark circles under our eyes, or remove crow's feet.

The Procedure

  • Your vision will be tested as well as your tear production, before surgery
  • Eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure done with local anesthetic and a sedative to keep you relaxed
  • It takes from 1 to 3 hours
  • Tiny incisions are made just underneath the eyelashes
  • Excess fat and skin are gently removed
  • The incision is closed with tiny sutures

Recovery

  • Dr. Parker will apply ointment to lubricate your eyes and may apply a bandage
  • Discomfort is controlled by a pain prescription
  • Keep your head elevated for a few days
  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising
  • For a couple of weeks you may have excessive tearing, some blurry vision, and sensitivity to light
  • Stitches are removed within the first week after surgery
  • You can read or watch TV after a few days
  • Normal activities can be resumed within a week or so
  • Vigorous activity should be postponed for about 3 weeks
