Gynecomastia Correction
Gynecomastia is a medical term that means enlargement of the male breast. It can affect one breast or both and is relatively common for adolescent boys and older males alike. An estimated 40% to 60% of men are affected by gynecomastia to varying degrees.
There is no known cause for a vast number of cases, which makes it all the more frustrating to people who suffer from it.
The social effects of gynecomastia can be distressing, even devastating. Many men express feelings of shame, embarrassment and humiliation and elect to undergo corrective surgery to gain a flatter, firmer chest with improved contour.
Ideal Candidates
The ideal candidates are:
- Healthy, emotionally stable males of any age
- Men whose skin has good elasticity and is still firm, so that it will easily reshape to the new body contours
The Procedure
- Treatment is performed under either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia
- Most commonly, two small, inconspicuous incisions are made to allow removal of fat and glandular tissue from the breast
- The surgery takes between one and two hours
- You can be discharged within one hour of the procedure
- You'll need to wear a snug-fitting compression vest for 1 to 3 weeks
- Removal of the vest and showering is permitted the day after surgery
- Pain is minimal
- All sutures dissolve
- You can probably return to work and normal activities within 1 week
- Light exercise can be started at two weeks and full exercise at three weeks
