Ears that over-protrude from the sides of the head can make boys and men self-conscious about their appearance. To improve upon the prominence of ears, an otoplasty, or ear surgery, can be a performed as a wonderful solution.
Boys over the age of four are the most common candidates for this procedure for two reasons:
- The ears are nearly completely grown by this time
- Most boys cite teasing as their motivation to undergo this surgery
The earlier the surgery takes place, the more they can avoid peer ridicule and the psychological trauma associated with it. Adults of any age, who are in good health, can be good candidates for this procedure. There is no age limit to having this surgery performed.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, otoplasty (cosmetic ear surgery) was the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery among men in 2012, with 12,053 otoplasties performed on men across the country.
The Procedure
- Surgery lasts roughly one-and-a-half hours
- It is performed under either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation
- Dr. Parker makes an inconspicuous incision behind the ear which permits him to sculpt the ear cartilage into a more normal configuration
- The ear is brought back closer to the side of the head, so it exhibits a normal amount of prominence
- Internal stitches are used to hold the cartilage in the desired shape
- Skin sutures, used to close the incisions behind the ears, dissolve by themselves
Recovery
- After a brief stay in our recovery room, patients return home
- There is virtually no pain
- Skin sutures, used to close the incisions behind the ears, dissolve by themselves
- Showering is permitted 3 to 4 days after the procedure
- Normal activities can be resumed within 7 to 10 days
- Exercise can be started at 2 weeks
If you or your son suffers from low self-esteem because of large or protruding ears, you should contact us to discuss otoplasty. It is a very safe and permanent solution to this condition.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Parker will discuss the procedure in detail and use computer imaging to give an idea of what the changes should look like after surgery.
Otoplasty procedures can also be combined with rhinoplasty, neck contouring, and chin implants.
