Otoplasty
Ears that over-protrude from the sides of the head can make children and adults self-conscious about their appearance. To reduce the size and prominence of ears, an otoplasty, or ear surgery, can be a performed as a wonderful solution.
Children over the age of four are the most common candidates for this procedure for two reasons:
- The ears are fully grown by this time
- Most children cite teasing as their motivation to undergo the surgery
The earlier the surgery takes place, the more ridicule they can avoid. However, children and adults of any age can be good candidates. There are no additional risks that come with age.
The Procedure
- Surgery lasts roughly one-and-a-half hours
- It’s performed under either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation
- Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Parker makes an inconspicuous incision behind the ear which permits him to sculpt the ear cartilage into a more normal configuration
- The ear is brought back closer to the side of the head
- Stitches are used to hold the cartilage in shape until the ear is fully healed
Recovery
- After a brief stay in our recovery room, you can return home
- There is virtually no pain
- The sutures dissolve on their own
- You can usually shower 3 to 4 days after the procedure
- You can resume all normal activities within 7 to 10 days
- Exercise can be started at 2 weeks
