We receive requests for fuller more luscious lips almost everyday. Plastic surgeons achieve their results by “plumping” the lips with various “filler substances.” These procedures leave no scars.
Restylane, Hylaform and Captique are three commercially available forms of hyualuronic acid, a natural occurring substance. One of these are injected into the lips. These seem last 6 to 12 months before requiring repeat injection. The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes to perform. Topical anesthesia and ice are usually applied before injection. Fat injections were used more frequently as a filler substance before the arrival of Restylane, Hylaform, Captique and Radiesse. It required “harvesting” or removal of fat from a donor site, “purification” of the fat and then injection. While good results were often obtained, we have achieved more consistent results more simply from the commercially available products.

Somewhat more pronounced lip enhancement can be achieved with AlloDerm. This is a solid, biodegradable implant derived from tissue banked cadaver skin. Under local anesthesia with or without intravenous sedation, AlloDerm is surgically inserted into both upper and lower lips through two tiny incisions at the corner of the mouth. It provides a fuller lip augmentation lasting up to two years in some cases.
