Liposuction
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, suction lipectomy or suction assisted lipectomy, is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.
The goal of liposuction is to remove targeted areas of diet and exercise resistant fat in order to contour the body. It is commonly used to treat the neck, breast, abdomen, back, and flanks. Liposuction is equally effective in men and women.
Liposuction is not a method of weight control or a treatment for obesity. It is a complement to diet and exercise, not a substitute for them.
Why Liposuction Works
Liposuction works wonders for many patients because the fat removal with liposuction is permanent.
- The body does not manufacture new fat cells after puberty.
- You can gain or lose weight by altering the amount of fat in each cell, but the number of those cells remains constant.
- While it is still possible to gain weight after liposuction, the fat will be deposited more evenly throughout the body. It does not selectively relocate to the areas that underwent liposuction. For this reason, you can think of liposuction as a body re-proportioning procedure.
The Best Candidates
The best candidates for liposuction are people near their ideal body weight with localized fat deposits. Liposuction can also provide an incentive for weight loss if you’re slightly or moderately overweight.
The Skin Tone Factor
Good skin tone is one of the mainstays of successful liposuction. The better your skin tone, the better your skin will contract to fit your new shape after the procedure. Certain areas of the body typically have good skin tone, e.g., in most men the flanks (hips) have good skin tone.
- Loose skin is characterized by poor elasticity
- Liposuction can improve your overall shape if you have loose skin but it will not substantially improve the skin laxity.
If the skin is loose:
If your skin has become loose, removal of excess skin with or without liposuction is more appropriate than just liposuction.
For example:
- Men with poor skin tone of the neck will get a better result with a neck lift
- People with loose abdominal skin and stretch marks would get a better result with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
Different ways to do the procedure:
Conventional liposuction
Removes the fat by suction alone. It works less well in areas of the body where fibrous tissue makes fat removal more difficult, such as:
- The abdomen
- The hips
- Male breasts
- The neck.
Tumescent liposuction
- Also called “super wet” liposuction, depending on the amount of solution injected
- It’s done under intravenous sedation and injection of a diluted local anesthetic solution
- It takes 30 minutes to several hours to perform
- Two very small incisions are used for each area treated
- A cannula is used to remove the unwanted fat
- Although these scars are permanent, they are almost always inconspicuous
VASER ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL)
- Also known as liposelection
- Uses sound waves to emulsify fat cells instead of removing them by suction alone
- Used most often in areas of the body where fibrous tissue makes fat removal more difficult with conventional cannulas, e.g., abdomen, hips, male breasts and the neck.
After the procedure, whichever way it is done:
- Incisions are closed with dissolving sutures
- You’re wrapped in a tight fitting surgical garment, which:
- Provides firm pressure and support to suctioned areas
- Promotes skin contraction
- Optimizes your final contour
- Our staff will review proper garment selection with you prior to surgery.
Liposuction Recovery
- People are typically discharged within 2 hours of surgery
- Those who have a significant amount of fat removed are usually monitored in our facility overnight by one of our highly trained registered nurses
- There is usually little pain
- The compression garment is worn for 1 to 3 weeks. It can be removed to shower the day after surgery
- You can probably return to work within 1 to 2 weeks and exercise soon thereafter
Liposuction can change your life in many ways. It can make you look better physically, make you feel better about yourself and give you the motivation to lead a healthier life. It is truly a life-altering procedure.
