What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a medical term that means enlargement of the male breast. It can affect one breast or both and is relatively common for adolescent boys and older males alike. There is no known cause of the condition in the vast majority of cases. Prominent nipples and “puffy” areolas are often seen with this condition.
The social effects of gynecomastia can be distressing, even devastating. Many patients suffer from body image issues, express feelings of shame, embarrassment and humiliation. Fortunately, corrective surgery to gain a flatter, firmer chest with improved contour and an improved emotional outlook (see Emotional Considerations with Gynecomastia).
Treatment of Gynecomastia
In most men, gynecomastia is caused by excess fatty tissue in the breast. In some, male breast enlargement is due to a combination of excess fatty tissue and firmer, glandular tissue together. Fortunately, both of these conditions can be treated by New Jersey Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Parker, using the VASER ultrasonic liposelection system. Through two small incisions, a special probe is introduced into the breast tissue. Its tip emits ultrasonic energy which emulsifies the fatty tissue and glandular tissue as well. The melted fat and breast tissue are then removed gently and atraumatically with an evacuation cannula. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures leaving scars which are imperceptible. Additionally, the VASER system causes skin tightening and shrinkage.

Results
Patients almost always recover quickly with our Rapid Recovery program, experiencing little pain (they often say they feel like they did too many push ups) from male breast reduction treatment with the VASER liposelection system. New Jersey patients notice an improvement in the appearance of their chest almost immediately. Their breasts are firmer, flatter and look normal without any visible scaring.
Psychologically, having been bothered by their appearance, often for years, patients now feel better about what they see in the mirror (see Emotional Considerations with Gynecomastia). As Dr. Parker continues to see his patients for routine follow up visits at increasing time intervals over the next several months, he observes their self confidence rise. They are progressively more comfortable removing their shirts in public and indulging in activities such as going to the beach. It is a very gratifying and uplifting surgery for our patients and staff alike.
