What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a medical term that means enlargement of the male breast. It can affect one breast or both and is relatively common in adolescent boys and older males alike. A reported 35-40% of males are affected by gynecomastia. The emotional and social effects of their condition can be very distressing to gynecomastia New Jersey patients. Many patients say they suffer from poor body image, expressing feelings of shame, embarrassment, and humiliation. They are often reluctant to remove their shirt in public and shy away from social interactions and activities like swimming, playing on sports teams, and participating in gym class.
What is the Cause of Gynecomastia?
There is no known measurable cause of gynecomastia in the vast majority of patients. In a small percentage of patients, gynecomastia may be caused by certain drugs or medical conditions involving the thyroid gland, kidneys, liver, or testes. If deemed appropriate, a patient may be evaluated by an endocrinologist or internist to rule out a known cause. When gynecomastia persists beyond 12 months, it rarely regresses.
How is Gynecomastia Treated?
Fortunately, in most cases gynecomastia can be corrected surgically through a straightforward procedure at the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery. The procedure is usually accompanied by a quick, painless recovery. This results in a flatter, firmer chest with improved contour and no visible scarring. It also leads to a marked improvement in emotional outlook (see Emotional Considerations with Gynecomastia). According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, gynecomastia surgery was the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery among men in 2012, with 22,736 surgeries performed on men across the country, showing a nearly 30% increase since 2011.
What is Scarless Breast Reduction for Men in New Jersey?
This 20-year-old was referred to Dr. Parker by another patient for treatment. Dr. Parker used ultrasonic liposelection was used to remove the excess breast tissue. Following surgery, the patient felt a renewed self-esteem with his improved contour.
In patients with gynecomastia, an excess of fat, glandular tissue, or a combination of both cause the breast to be enlarged. Unless you have severe gynecomastia (see male chest lift) with marked breast enlargement and excess skin, your gynecomastia can be treated using a minimally invasive liposuction technique, Scarless Breast Reduction for Men in New Jersey.
Liposuction is an effective method of treatment to remove fatty excess from the breast. New Jersey Plastic Surgeon Dr. Parker typically uses the VASER Ultrasonic Liposuction system, having found it provides more efficient, less traumatic fat removal along with skin tightening and reduction. Through one tiny, well concealed incision in the armpit area, an ultrasonic cannula is inserted. Its tip emits ultrasonic energy that melts the fatty tissue. The melted fat is then removed gently and cleanly with a second liposuction cannula. The incision is closed with a single dissolvable suture, leaving a hidden, imperceptible scar; in essence, a minimally invasive Scarless Breast Reduction for Men in New Jersey.
In patients with excess glandular tissue, alone or in combination with excess fatty tissue, Dr. Parker removes the fibrous glandular tissue with a specialized cannula that breaks up the glandular tissue and removes it. He inserts this cannula through the same tiny incision in the armpit area used for liposuction. The incision is then closed with a single dissolvable suture, leaving a hidden, imperceptible scar, and resulting in a minimally invasive Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey.
These procedures, which usually take about one hour to complete, are performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, monitored by one of our board certified anesthesiologists in our on-site, state of the art, private, and comfortable ambulatory surgical center.
This technique of minimally invasive, Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey, eliminates the need for long, periareolar incisions still made by many surgeons, which leaves visible scarring around the areola.
What are the Recovery and Results like for Patients Undergoing Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey?
Patients almost always recover quickly with our Rapid Recovery program, experiencing little pain (they often say they feel like they did too many push-ups), mild-to-moderate swelling, and minimal bruising from breast reduction for men. New Jersey patients notice an improvement in the appearance of their chest almost immediately. Their chests are firmer, flatter, and look normal, without any visible scarring.
Psychologically, having been bothered by their appearance, often for years, patients now feel better about what they see in the mirror (see Emotional Considerations with Gynecomastia). As Dr. Parker continues to see his patients for routine follow-up visits over the next several months, he observes their self-confidence rise, even as the time between visits increases. They are progressively more comfortable removing their shirts in public and engaging in social activities such as going to the beach. It is a very gratifying and uplifting surgery for our patients and staff alike.
This 34 year old requested Dr. Parker to improve the fullness of his chest. Dr. Parker removed fat and fibroglandular tissue from both breasts with liposuction through a tiny incision in the armpit, resulting in a scarless procedure with quick and painless recovery.
This 20 year old was referred to Dr. Parker by his primary care physician. Dr. Parker removed excess fat from each side using liposuction.
Can Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey Correct Puffy Nipples?
Prominent nipples and “puffy” areolas are often seen with gynecomastia and can be corrected with the technique of minimally invasive, Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey described above.
This 27 year old complained to Dr. Parker about the puffiness of his nipples. Dr. Parker used VASER ultrasonic liposuction to remove fat from each breast. The patient recovered with no pain and very little swelling and bruising.
If I have Inverted Nipples, how Can they be Treated?
Up to ten percent of men have inverted, or retracted, nipples. This may occur as a standalone issue or in conjunction with gynecomastia. When this is a long standing problem, it does not present a health risk, though patients may be bothered by the appearance of inverted nipples. The cause of inverted nipples is contraction of tissue between the nipple and underlying glandular tissue.
This 27 year old requested correction of inverted nipples. He felt self-conscious about them and was reluctant to take his shirt off at the beach. Dr. Parker released the inverted nipples into a normal position, using local anesthesia.
Correction of inverted nipples in men New Jersey can be obtained with a simple, 20-minute, in-office procedure under local anesthesia. During this procedure, Dr. Parker releases the constricting bands with a tiny incision, allowing the inverted nipple to assume a normal position. The procedure can be done alone or at the time of gynecomastia correction with Scarless Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey.
If I have Severe Gynecomastia with Marked Breast Enlargement and Excess Skin, how Can this be Treated?
In more severe cases of gynecomastia, a male chest lift may be the best option. Male patients with severe gynecomastia have marked breast development, including excess skin and enlarged areolas. In these cases, Dr. Parker may need to remove skin and re-contour the chest in order to achieve a masculine appearance. Men who have lost significant amounts of weight may also need help with excess chest skin.
This 34 year old patient was referred by his primary care physician for treatment of gynecomastia. Dr. Parker removed fat with ultrasonic liposuction and excised glandular tissue through a peri-areolar incision.
Breast Reduction for men New Jersey can be combined with other body procedures, as needed.
