New Jersey Plastic Surgeon Educates on Differences in Male Rhinoplasty – the Most Popular Cosmetic Procedure for Men
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2011 statistics, Rhinoplasty is the most performed plastic surgery on men. Dr. Paul M. Parker of Parker Center for Plastic Surgery discusses the differences between male and female rhinoplasty.
(PRWEB) November 27, 2012 – Rhinoplasty or a “nose job” has always been a top cosmetic surgical procedure for both sexes. In 2011, it was the most popular cosmetic surgery for men (24,533 men had rhinoplasties) and the eighth most popular cosmetic surgery for women (101,574 women had rhinoplasties), according to the ASPS.
“Rhinoplasty is a popular surgery because it has such a dramatic effect on a person’s appearance. I believe that it should make a woman’s appearance more beautiful and a man’s more handsome and masculine,” said Dr. Parker.
Rhinoplasty has been defined as the surgery that most combines the art and science of plastic surgery. While rhinoplasty can be done for purely aesthetic reasons, it is also done to take care of physical defects of the nose. Creating an aesthetically pleasing nose that is balanced and in harmony with the rest of the face takes a high degree of skill and experience.
Dr. Paul M. Parker of the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery in Paramus, NJ goes on to explain that correcting the form and function of the nose should be done conservatively to preserve a natural looking result. When appropriate, Dr. Parker will perform a chin augmentation in conjunction with Rhinoplasty to optimize balance and facial harmony. With this combination Dr. Parker will often have to do less extensive surgery on the nose to achieve a more natural look for the patient.
”There are many differences between creating the optimal male and female nose. The male face is heavier, squarer and the nose is more pronounced than on the female face. We work to create a male nose that is wider and straighter without the slight curve we give a female nose. There’s also several differences in the tip of a male nose, which is broader and fuller than a woman’s nose,” explained Dr. Parker.
Dr. Parker goes on to explain other differences in rhinoplasty surgery between men and women. A female nose will have a supratip break (a slight depression just before the tip), and the male nose does not. The angle of the underside of the nose to the upper lip should be slightly less in men than women. Also the chin should be more prominent in men, and the skin of male patients tends to be thicker than women.

During their initial consultation, Dr. Parker will first have the patient explain what they don’t like about their nose. Dr. Parker will then perform a physical examination of the face and nose. Following that, Dr. Parker will carefully explain a customized treatment plan to the patient, pointing out to them on their nose what changes he plans to make. He will supplement this discussion with a computer imaging session to give the patient an idea what their nose should look like after surgery. Digital imaging is very helpful to patients, allowing them to correlate the surgeon’s verbal description of the results with a morphed photo image.
