Dr. Paul M. Parker Credits Technological Advancements and High Demand As Arm Lifts Named Fastest Growing Surgery in U.S.

Dr. Paul M. Parker of the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery recognizes advancements in weight loss surgery, an aging population and celebrity icons as causes of the remarkable increases in arm lift surgeries.

(PRWEB) June 11, 2013 – According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), brachioplasty, commonly known as arm lift surgery, has increased an astounding 4,378% since 2000, making it one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures. In 2000, there were only 300 upper arm lift procedures performed in the U.S. In 2012, that number rose to 15,457. Perhaps the strongest contributing factor to the dramatic increase is the growth of weight loss surgeries in the past twelve years.

“Bariatric surgery leaves patients with a large amount of excess skin after their extreme weight loss. While patients are usually ecstatic about the amount of weight that they have lost, they often still appear large simply due to the remaining skin. Removal of the excess skin on the upper arms through arm lift surgery is a great solution,” explained Dr. Parker of the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery.

Yet weight loss surgery is not the only reason for the increase. The technology used in the plastic surgery field has advanced substantially in the past 12 years. Surgeons are now better equipped to perform liposuction (fat removal) and brachioplasty (excess skin removal) less invasively and with less scarring, which ultimately leads to better patient results.

“For patients with fatty deposits in the upper arms, we are using improved liposuction techniques that combine smaller cannulas with ultrasound and lasers. Another substantial advancement is the use of barbed suture technology in patients undergoing removal of excess skin. These sutures have been a major contributor in Dr. Parker’s practice with quicker and improved wound healing. These improvements combine to give patients the arm contour they’ve been looking for with less downtime and minimal scarring,” said Dr. Parker.

Recent celebrity trends may also contribute to the increase in arm lifts over the past years. As public figures, the toned arms of Michelle Obama, Kelly Ripa, and Jennifer Aniston grace the tabloids and television channels daily.

“Current fashion trends and high profile celebrities constantly showcase toned arms. With our technological advances, we are now able to give patients the look they are after,” Dr. Parker stated.

Dr. Paul M. Parker is the medical director of both the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery and Beaura Spa. Dr. Parker has more than 20 years of experience as a plastic surgeon and has won numerous awards including the “Patient’s Choice” award. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
