New Jersey Liposuction for Fat Removal

Parker Center in Paramus, New Jersey

Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, suction lipectomy or suction assisted lipectomy is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. The goal of liposuction is to remove diet resistant localized deposits of excess fat and contour the body. It is commonly used to treat the neck, breast, abdomen, back, flanks, hips, thighs, arms, knees, calves and ankles. Liposuction is equally effective in men and women.

Fat removal with liposuction is permanent. The body does not manufacture new fat cells after puberty. Patients gain or lose weight by altering the amount of fat in each cell but not the absolute number of cells. While it is still possible to gain weight after liposuction, the fat is deposited more evenly throughout the body. It does not selectively relocate to the areas, which underwent liposuction. Think of liposuction as a body re-proportioning procedure.

Liposuction Candidates

The best candidates for liposuction are patients near their ideal body weight with localized fat deposits. Liposuction can provide incentives for weight loss in those patients who are slightly are moderately overweight. Liposuction is not a method of weight control or the treatment for obesity. It is complimentary to diet and exercise, not a substitute for it.

Good skin tone is one of the mainstays of successful liposuction results. The better the skin tone, the better the skin will contract to fit the newly contoured fat following the procedure. Certain areas of the body have good skin tone. For example in most women the hips, outer thighs, knees, back and neck all have good skin tone.

"I was especially pleased with the staff's attention post-op. Nurse spent much time with me to make sure I was comfortable. I enjoyed post-op massage!!!" —Liposuction Patient

Loose skin is characterized by poor elasticity. Liposuction can improve overall shape in patients with loose skin but it will not improve their skin laxity. In these cases, removal of excess skin with or without liposuction is more appropriate then liposuction itself. For example, women with poor skin tone of the inner thighs will get a better result with an inner thigh lift than liposuction. Patients with loose abdominal skin and stretch marks will not undergo skin contraction after liposuction. They would experience a better result with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

Cellulite is unattractive dimpling and puckering of the skin frequently seen in the thighs and buttocks. It increases with age. Liposuction alone will not improve cellulite. We have, however, experienced good results in some patients with cellulite by releasing the puckered areas with a "pickle fork" and injecting their own fat to prevent recurrence of the problem.

Liposuction Surgery and Recovery

Liposuction is performed frequently with intravenous sedation and injection of a dilute local anesthetic solution (referred to as tumescent or super wet technique based on amount injected). Two very small incisions are used for each area treated. Although these scars are permanent, they are almost always inconspicuous.

A cannula is used to remove the unwanted fat in liposuction. VASER ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) uses sound waves to emulsify fat cells instead of removing them by suction alone. This is called liposelection. It is used most often in areas of the body where fibrous tissue makes fat removal more difficult with conventional cannulas. These areas include abdomen, hips, male breasts and often neck. Conventional liposuction works well in the other areas. Incisions are closed with dissolving sutures and the patient placed in a tight fitting surgical garment. These garments provide firm pressure and support to suctioned areas, promote skin contraction and optimize your final contour. Our staff will review proper garment selection with you prior to surgery.

Liposuction lasts from 30 minutes to several hours depending on how many areas are involved. Patients are most often discharged within two hours of surgery. Patients who have a significant amount of fat removed usually are monitored overnight in our facility by a registered nurse. There is usually little pain associated with liposuction. A compression garment placed at the time of surgery is worn for one to three weeks. It can be removed to shower a day following surgery. Patients commonly return to work within one to two weeks and exercise soon thereafter.
